Prozac is effective not only for depression
Everybody knows that Prozac is effective against emotional pain but little do know that it is also prescribed for those who are being treated for cancer. How can it be true? How can an antidepressant help to fight cancer?
Dr. Dan Peer of the Department of Cell Research and Immunology at Tel Aviv University is really to confirm that it can fight cancer. A study he and his colleagues recently completed validates that Prozac has the effectiveness of a widely used anti-cancer drug. This is what he states:
"It is amazing that the medical community won't have to wait for the anti-cancer drug to appear. Prozac can be used for this purpose right away." Dr. Peer also mentioned that doctors in the U.S. already prescribe it to treat depression in chemotherapy patients and that it is surely working good.
Fighting Drug Resistance in Colon Cancer Patients
Dr.Peer also noted that Prozac is a very interesting non-specific blocker of cancer resistance. He has been researching and focusing on colon cancer and the anti-cancer treatment for a long time but was truly surprised by Prozac’s abilities to help avoid cancer.
The Tel Aviv University scientists led by graduate student Mirit Argov together with Prof. Rimona Margalit, found that Prozac enhanced doxorubicin's efficacy more than 1,000%. Prozac, in effect, worked to block the cancer drug from leaving the interior of the cancer cell and poisoning the healthy non-cancerous cells that surrounded it.
This has been tested on animals as well, As the results proved that Prozac significantly slows down tumor progression. These results have been sent to different Cancer institutions , published in Cancer Letters and Dr. Peer is known to have listed his Prozac recommendations in the latest version of Cancer Encyclopedia.
Working Backward to Make Great Advances
Dr.Peer says that working with major drug developer they have revealed Prozac’s magic potential and they will gladly put the results forward to start saving lives all around the globe.
It is very problematic to protect the patient as any healthcare assistant can prescribe Prozac and Tel Aviv University will not be able to result and commercialize the research. Dr. Peer suggested for the researches to unite their forces and share the studies of all the types of cancer treatment in which Prozac was recommended. He also noted that that chemotherapy and Prozac cases should be validated.
Dr. Peer stressed the importance of Prozac as the depression cure. He noted : “ We need to take the files of chemo patients and determine whether they received Prozac for their depression or not. Prozac may be a good choice as cancer- fighting drug. It could also give us valuable information on how to design new drugs in the future”.
The Tel Aviv University is occupied with the development of new drugs that would fight breast, blood and brain cancers. Therefore, any information provided about Prozac could be useful in creation of a new, even better and more effective drug to fight these severe maladies.
